Energymax metal detector UK review

  morsiani energy max picture
I believe the Morsiani ENERGYMAX metal detector is manufactured in Eastern Europe also known as the NRG 100.
It looks like a Tejon-Teknetics T2 Hybrid, although some new features make the energymax very different. It would appear we have a little piece of everything to suit all detecting levels.

It may be worth keeping a close watch on the Bulgarian market. These guys have always given the hobby 100% dedication, for many of them detecting is a living, they don't buy into gimmicks or big adverts just no nonsense machines that do the job efficiently.

If you think the makes and models we are "steered into" through magazines and forums are the be all and end all...think again...there's a massive choice out there.

I was pleasantly surprised with the slick design.... I paid just over 320 euro's for my model and must say the energymaxx has good build quality equal to other metal detectors in the mid to top price range and packed with features found on more expensive machines.

Delivery time 3 days from Italy to the UK.

 energymax adjustable recovery speed
Adjustable recovery speed

Like so many European machines it was complimented with features to suit the more serious detectorist.
The translated instruction manual is very easy to follow. one particular feature that intrigued me was the high / low mineralization control which I believe is an adjustable recovery speed potentiometer, the low position certainly gives the machine a much faster recovery.

The underarm battery pack is fitted with re chargeable battery pack which is sealed, the manual states a 12 hour operating time to a 4 hour charge, exhausted batteries will cause the warning light to flash.
There is no provision for Alkalines to be fitted to this machine

three way toggle switch discrimination, vco pin point and tone ID
Underneath the control box is a 3 way trigger operated switch
Trigger back = VCO pin point
Trigger forward = Iron Mask (regular discrimination)
Trigger middle= Tone ID low tone for Iron High tone for non ferrous

SEARCH COIL AND LEAD

Large 2D seach coil Tough plastic coated coil wire
The search coil is very much like the Teknetics T2 although slightly bigger, it appears to be a good solid unit the wire and plug fit well and look hard wearing and robust, it may be worth noting no coil cover is supplied.

Good quality coil plug locking collar to hold the lower stem in place
The locking collar grips the stem without to much effort...it needs to because there are no locating holes in the middle stem.

HEADPHONE JACK
Headphone socket to small
The Energymaxx is fitted with a tiny jack which I am not happy with.... when stereo headphones are connected the audio signal will only work in one ear, I had to make a "step up" mono extension lead allowing a 6mm headphone jack to be used, more will be explained in the Energymaxx UK field test

ENERGYMAX CONTROLS
Energymax control panel
Settings for a very contaminated site

Auto GEB
As you can see there is an auto GEB button on the face plate, this will put the Energymax into a fixed GEB ( Ground balance ) not auto as stated, it is a static pre-set option to cope with some of the worst ground conditions, pressing the button once will give a single beep telling you the fixed GEB has been activated, press again to hear 2 beeps and return back into manual GEB.
Auto GEB mode will deactivate the ground balance control and the tone ID feature making the Energy max into a fast easy to operate conventional detector similar to Tesoro, Whites etc.

Threshold Control
The threshold control has 2 purposes firstly to maintain a steady background hum when searching clean(ish) soil but secondly and most important it adjusts the power of the machine (and this machine has some power). In many ways very much like the Nexus, use this feature to tame the beast. Only adjust the sensitivity when conditions allow e.g.: if you can set the threshold to a low hum without the machine becoming unstable.
The picture above shows how I ran the Energymax on my junky Roman site.

Ground Balance
When the Energymax is switched on manual ground balance is the default, ground balancing is very easy I have found the central position is about normal.

Discrimination
This is the part where I may sound confused....basically because I am confused, zero discrim rejects most Iron with ease, as you rotate it clockwise the Iron is rejection is heavier. Every slight turn of the discrimination takes about 4 seconds to catch up so you cant put a piece of foil across the coil and slowly increase the discrimination until it is rejected, you have to wait 1-2-3-4 then try....adjust wait 1-2-3-4 then try. This 4 second rule also applies when switching from single tone to tone ID especially in fixed GEB mode.

Mineralization control
As explained earlier it adjusts the recovery speed giving a short or wide signal, a short signal (low) is preferred when searching amongst iron, where as a wide signal (high) will give much better depth on soil with low iron and high minerals such as forests and possibly beaches.

Sensitivity control
This works in tandem with the Threshold control, it makes the circuitry more sensitive, quite often you will not require a high sensitivity in order to maintain a smooth operation.
