do you use headphones
« on: October 28, 2016, 07:49 am »
I've read posts about people turning up at rallies without headphones and it being a nuisance the noise of machines bleeping all around, having not yet been on a rally I had not thought about this and would have been one of those turning up without . I have never worn headphones whilst detecting and feel more comfortable without them ,but as I am the only person on my permission as far as I;m aware it doesn't really matter. Do the majority of members on here wear them and if so do you think that they help distinguishing between the various tones ?

Firstly the loudspeaker on detectors are awful and give very bad quality sound and are annoying to other detectorists.

The sound quality through headphones is far superior quality and give more information than through speakers. You will miss a lot of signals on a windy day or in a slightly noisier environment.

Always wear them! I honestly do not know how people can detect without them.

And yes, I've been on a few digs with people who refuse to wear headphones and to say it's annoying is the understatement of the decade. I'm pleased to see now that more and more rally rules state that headphones must be worn!

Couple of fellas in my club were not using headphones. It drove me mad, so yes you would probably upset people. You may not be allowed on the rally without them. I always wear headphones. Once you notice how much better your audio feedback becomes you will most likely hate being without them.

The use of headphones is highly advisable but obviously not enforceable as its a personal decision whether or not you want to use them. It can be seen as anti social by many around you when not using them  for the obvious reason it can annoy and irritate those around you who are plagued by the noises given off by the user without headphones ,because then every one else hears it too and it must be loud if people wearing headphones are hearing it .So please have a bit of consideration for others around you when not using headphones .
The Main reason they should be worn is that without them ,unless your hearing is 100% fully accurate you can and almost certainly will without a shadow of doubt miss the very quiet whisper signals that without headphones you would almost certainly miss, and even with 100% accurate hearing, the outside noises will be blocked from interfering with your listening for signals by having headphones on, so they are extremely beneficial.
So what are you missing by not wearing them ? Well of course you will never know if you don`t use headphones. You may say "Well ,I`m finding plenty without them ". But who is to say you would not be finding more WITH THEM ?
If you own a good set of headphones finer detail of target sound can be heard where without them they will be missed  and that is a fact.  Noises from about you such as every day things can and will intermix with your sound coming from your speaker on your detector and can and will be masking the target sounds from your detector ,and you won`t even know  your missing them because you never heard them ..
From my personal opinion its folly to not wear them but, it really is down to personal choice, but I would argue , "why put yourself at a disadvantage  of finding the very things your masking by not wearing headphones " but if your happy detecting at a disadvantage please go ahead, because what your missing ,then gives me a chance to find what you missed.?

Headphones are a must to pick up those faint signals you would not hear on speakers.

Try the Xp blue backphones, very light, excellent sound quality and only £11.95 from Regton.

I wouldn't go to a rally or club event without them having read this ,but on my permission with no one else about I reserve the right to please myself , having said that thanks for replying and I am now considering which headphones to buy I have a t2dse and would like to ask opinions of which headphones would match up well with this detector . I never used to use a pinpointer but having read about them on here I took the plunge and bought a nokta pinpointer which I now wouldn't be without maybe it will be the same with headphones

I think you will be converted - once you start, similar to the pin pointer!

Quote wickenuk,...." I am now considering which headphones to buy I have a t2dse and would like to ask opinions of which headphones would match up well with this detector . "
This is not an easy question to answer because most people will start throwing every make and style under the sun at you mostly down to their own preference s without taking the detector asked about into consideration.
The reason I say that is because believe it or not, Some headphones which are brilliant in some certain detectors are not so good sounding on others.
I would suggest you find a pair with Mylar speakers in them,  as they are usually above 100 ohm which is what you need . You also might want to take the style into consideration also, such as whether you want "on the ear " headphones or ,"over the ear " headphones.  I again would recommend " over the ear ones " as they really do attempt to isolate out side noise interference. the plus also with them is they help keep the cold off your ears,a minor point I know, but relevant when detecting in quite cold weather.
What also "might" be worth doing is asking anyone with a T2 what  headphones they like which could give you some idea as to which may be suitable for you.
XP back phones some one suggested  are indeed very good, but they are "on the ear" headphones and they do bleed a bit from within if your volume is high ,and their acceptance  from outside noise`s can be heard ,but tonally they are quite good.

I think headphones should be made compulsory on all detectors, as there is nothing worse than listening to others detectors while detecting and it always seem's to be yellow Garrett owners which make a really annoying ding anyway. As pointed out by others you will benefit from hearing a lot more with them so there is a big plus for getting some. I prefer over ear headphones as they do help to block out the every day sounds around you and help to get into the zone so to speak.

I can see the case for compulsory use of headphones at a rally or club meet ,but surely its personal choice on your own permission , and what are you going to do about noise from pinpointers . I think that tales of being followed around by other detectorists and people rushing to an area where they think that there's been a good find has quite put me off club or rally detecting .thank goodness that i'm fortunate enough to have my own permissions even if they're not the most productive .

It is enforceable, some Clubs now wont allow you to detect without them now, that's enforcement in my book. Good job too there is no need for anyone to have to listen to another detector bleeping away when trying to concentrate on your own.

Sorry If my comments weren't worded very well, I wasn't followed around by "the campanologists" it was more coincidental.  When your on 300 acres and finding nothing, it's human nature to migrate to areas where people are finding Roman coins or hammys as your all hoping to find the hotspots from the start. Funny enough, on a previous club dig there was talk of a possible hotspot at the very far end of the field.  At the 9 oclock start, several of the gang charged off like an advancing line of Centurions, and off into the distance they went.  They came back with sod all  ::) you just never know on virgin land.

My headphones broke recently, I dropped them.  I carried on without them. Yes it's nice to have the freedom of no wires, but I would prefer to be tethered and have the superior audio, I really missed the headphones.  Once you use them and get "in the zone" most people never go back. Ultimately we go out there to find stuff  ;)
