Medieval finger thimble ?
« on: January 30, 2022, 02:35 am »
I was out a few weeks ago, November actually, and I had what I thought was a broken thimble. Rather stupidly I didn't take things any further, then tonight I finally got round to publishing the video of the days detecting. I have a comment advising that I found a medieval finger thimble?

I'm a bit embarrassed actually, after 6 years detecting I can't believe I didn't research this properly at the time, and that i didn't realise it could be something nice. The picture of the finger is my adult little finger. Any info on age and ID greatly appreciated.

Don't feel bad Keith. I have posted "junk" several times on other forums only to have someone point out it was just the opposite of junk.  :D

Yes buddy it does have that look about it. It's perfectly cut so I am certain it's always been a thimble ring.

I blame it on my recent lack of detecting time, I'm getting a bit rusty !

Yep, an open top thimble. I found one once and also thought it was broken at first!

I though my first one was just missing the top too!

I suspect yours is 16th century. The exact date depends on wether the design spirals to the left or right. More details can be found here https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecordingguides/textile-equipment/#Ring-type_thimbles

Great find.

Thanks fir the info Oxgirl, and yes I think your right, the design and size matches the 16th century examples, I'm pleased with that.

It's a big permission, not prolific, but if you put the hours in these nice finds pop up, and occasionally something really special too.

I can't find it now, but I recall seeing one offered for sale at an eye watering price, purporting to be a viking beard ring ;D

OMG what next  ::)

It is a lovely find but  beard ring is funny.

Did you know they (any type of copper based thimbles) were really expensive items as they were imported. Most people used leather thimbles. Who ever lost that one would have been well peed off.
