Title: Why so much lead?
Post by: mason on January 09, 2019, 06:29 pm
Me and a mate have been detecting a field and have been finding loads of roman coins,
but for every coin we find we have to dig about ten to twenty bits of lead before we find a coin.
Can anyone shed any light  as to why so much lead would be around these roman coins?

Very likely old Roman lead.

We get the same at a old Roman site where lead was produced and some was turned into large ingots known as (Pigs).

These were then shipped to Italy via the Bristol Channel.

Happy Hunting,

Jerry.

Collect it and melt it into a bar, paint it gold .

Then put it in the bin 2 weeks later the novelty of making a heavy gold bar has gone .
