Metal detector headphones straight or curly lead
Hi Gary
Thanks for your time at the dig, when I saw you using a straight lead with your headphones i was somewhat confused, your reasonns made sense but were not enough to convince me at the time. Having used your spare set with straight lead I am now a convert the lead is no problem and much better than the cumbersome curly leads we have all used in the past.
I strongly advise your readers to not follow the rest of the sheep and try this method as soon as possible.

Red heat metal detectors
Sadly Vic the owner of red heat detectors has now passed away we (Nov 07) would like to offer our condolences and deepest sympathy to his family.
I very much doubt if the production of the XD 17 and other models will continue.

Brasher hill master boot
The most expensive boots I have ever purchased I have found them to be very comfortable and so far waterproof although my feet still get a little cold in the Ice. The only complaint would be the copper eylets can give a signal if the coil get's to near.

A Saxon gold penny fetches £230,000 found with a metal detector in Bedfordshire

A NEW WORLD AUCTION RECORD FOR A BRITISH COIN

Coenwulf, King of Mercia (796-821)
Gold Penny, London

The first Anglo-Saxon gold penny to come to light for almost a century, has been sold at Spink today (06/10/04) for a record-breaking price of £230,000 (€336,000/$411,400). Found by an amateur metal detectorist in 2001, beside the River Ivel in Bedfordshire, the gold penny had been expected to fetch £120,000-150,000. It was bought in the saleroom by Allan Davisson, an American collector of early British coins from Minnesota

Iron mask -16 open screen
Set the sensitivity as high as possible, iron will give a low Blatt, good targets will sound higher.
Notes: Deep Roman coins will sometimes fall in the lower left of the screen but give the odd high tone, the cursor will move right as target is investigated.
At first the Explorer may give an iron tone  the pitch will get higher as you work the signal, this is normal as the machine needs time to analyse the target.
Odd shaped iron will sometimes give a low and high tone together, but the cursor will always stay in the top left, investigate the target if the cursor tries to move to the right it can be a target on top of Iron.
I know this may not be the ideal settings for some, but I am sure it will get you the most out of your Explorer (on a low mineralised site), it may drive you crazy on an iron infested site, try lowering the gain and sensitivity to settle things down.
Let me know if you have any success

Close but no cigar !!

I met up with Mark the Canadian for a sneaky days detecting during the week, he wanted to test the Gold Maxx against his Explorer, the site we wanted to try was still in stubble and due to be ploughed at any day, so this was possibly our last chance.

The field was a long sloping bank leading down to an old church and a river, in the past we have had some nice Roman and Medieval finds, detecting on this bank has always been a pleasurable experience, the view is priceless and your mind just drifts into another world.

After some time Mark called me over to pin point a target for him, he had already dug a pit large enough to get my 9" coil into ,the target was central, I told him to keep digging, while I sat to one side and kept him company as he thrashed his way through the hard flints. Some time later I took pity on the poor guy and offered him my spade which was a lot more robust and easier to use, Mark suggested that I have a go at digging so he could take a rest and get some air.OK I said but if its a hoard I want half, of coarse  he replied that goes without saying. which I knew anyway I just wanted to check.

Having removed the flint, the soil became very soft. we were down at least a 18 inches, and still no signal from our probes, then the colour of the soil changed to black, I put my hand in the hole and started pulling out burnt wood. Mark said I think we have something good here, perhaps its a cremation, what if there are grave goods and and and, then I got a signal from my probe, its here I cried, I can just see the edge of it, its a metallic object and has a woven effect, possibly a torque. We looked at each other in silence, then carefully excavated around the area waiting for our dream to become reality. Our dream was shattered when we unearthed a burnt out telegraph pole still with some cable attached. We sat on the edge of the hole and looked at each other, how close was that Marks said, close but no Cigar I replied.
